The astronomical division of the sky contains paths through which the moon, sun, and major planets all travel. This is called the zodiac and it is considered to be contain twelve segments covering some thirty degrees, and each of these have acquired Greco-Roman tradition names for a group of stars called a constellation. These names are often of animals and mythological characters. Each of these are zodiac or star signs.
The measurements for the star signs were taken from the vernal equinox point but due to its movement along the ecliptic, the zodiac constellations do not properly correspond to the thirty degree segments. The word zodiac comes from a Greek word meaning animal and most of the star signs represent an animal. One determines their zodiac sign and symbol by their birth month and day.

Astrological traditions study the influence of celestial bodies on the lives of humans. Star signs are use to interpret an astrological chart that is often centered on time and place of an event being charted. Each person sharing the same star sign is said to have many similar and shared characteristics.
There are four sets of signs that are associated with the four classic elements. Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio are known as "water" signs while Aquarius, Libra and Gemini are known as "air" signs. Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus are the "earth" signs.
